Student Senate Update 2/2
By Kate Tortolini
BRISTOL, R.I. – At this week’s student senate meeting, two individuals were appointed to new roles, there was an update on the search for John King’s successor, and special appearances from the President and the Provost were discussed for the future.
Sophia Bloom was appointed to the Clubs and Orgs Chair. The Senate voted to swear her in at the meeting. “After an interview process, she determined that Sophia Bloom would be a great clubs and organizations chair, and that’s what this bill would secure,” said Henry Siravo, one of the Student Senators.
Additionally, Camila Diaz Ochoa was sworn in as a general senator. “After a rigorous vetting process, our wonderful student body president determined Camila would make a great senator, so that’s what this bill would do,” Siravo said.
Emma Morin–the student body President and part of the search committee–announced that the search for the next Vice President of Student Life is underway. 56 applicants were received. “The search committee is currently reviewing and screening candidates, and the process is moving forward as planned,” Morin said. Finalists for the position are expected to visit from the following spring break through the end of April, and there will be pre-planned events with them. “There will be planned opportunities for student involvement, including Q&A forums, and engagement with student leaders.”
Lastly, there was a conversation regarding President Miaoulos attending a future Senate meeting to respond to student concerns and answer questions. “I’m just trying to figure out a date that works for the President and the Senate,” Morin said. Additionally, a discussion regarding Provost Margaret Everett attending future Student Senate meetings to answer students’ questions was also presented.
